Everyone has different experiences when it comes to music or art, and today I’m posting a response to the Daily Prompt, which says : Describe what it feels like to hear a beautiful piece of music or see a stunning piece of art.
Wow, how can I describe that feeling? It’s only something you understand when you’ve experienced that feeling yourself.
In May 2011, I visited the MALI (Museo de Arte de Lima) in Lima, Peru.
As I walked into the exhibit, I was immediately overwhelmed.
Imagine this painting covering a giant wall in front of you…
The shadows and colors vividly popping out at you under the exhibit lights.
The expressions on the faces describing perfectly the emotions behind them.
The urgency of the situation as the Incan emperor lay dead after his execution.
The impressive size of the painting, allowing you to feel as if you are in that moment.
It was a moment when I felt as if the death and mourning of Atahualpa were happening right then. I felt this stirring of emotions inside as I studied the faces of the mourners, the priests, the guards. I really can’t describe all the emotions that took place in me, but it was one of those times when everything around me ceases to exist, and I am one with the art. Sounds completely crazy, I know, but it’s so true!
As I studied the art, the colors, everything about the huge painting, I had such an appreciation for that event in Peruvian history and how Montero captured it. It honestly was a moment of understanding and admiration.
Music and art is all appreciated differently by different people and I feel like it’s hard to describe how I feel when I see or hear a beautiful work. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.
